The wine and dine tapas plate sets were brought in from one of JadeCrate’s fairtrade groups, Craft Link.  They are a nonprofit organization, working with Vietnamese artisans to generate income, with a focus on ethnic minorities and artisans with disabilities. Craft Link also markets products from traditional Vietnamese handicraft villages. Craft Link helps artisan groups design new products and develop marketing opportunities.

Craftlink often sends a team of designers and project officers to live in a village to work on new ideas, provide training for artisans in management, bookkeeping, costing, pricing and product development. Craft Link sells artisans’ handicrafts locally and exports their handicrafts to fair trade organizations and commercial companies around the world. The organization’s goals include cultural preservation, public education on traditional handicraft.  Other efforts focus on income generation for small-scale Vietnamese artisans and acquiring new markets. Artisans working with Craft Link receive tools, interest-free loans, education, training and literacy classes.

Craft Link was established in 1996 by a group of international nongovernmental organizations, including Mennonite Central Committee, Oxfam, and the Ford Foundation. It was founded to help generate income for poor and marginalized people, and to help traditional handicraft groups find markets within Vietnam’s changing economic system. Craft Link is a member of the World Fair Trade Organization (WFTO). (information provided by 10,000 Villages)

Mindfulness Monday – Simply Breathe

The purest form of mindfulness is to breathe simply.

The caveat here with the exercise is to breathe with conscious effort.  All those breaths have a purpose besides keeping your heart and brain going.  We challenge you to start a 5 Mindful Breaths exercise you can do every day, before work, at work, after work, anywhere you like.  Rules of engagement are you will use these five deep breaths of fresh air to think free and preferably concentrate on only the breathing.  This exercise is particularly useful if you are feeling restless, anxious, angry, or stressed.  Use the time to focus on only one thought or image.  If necessary close your eyes and picture something that brings you peace, joy, makes you feel relaxed and hold on to it.  When you complete the exercise, you will notice a difference in your state of mind and a big dose of H2O is healthy for you too. In Season – Watermelon

The JadeCrate newsletter comes with a recipe, usually comprised of in-season vegetables and a protein.  However, it’s July, it’s hot, thirst beats out hunger in this simple recipe.

If you are looking for something refreshing and unique and maybe you are a vegetarian or vegan, you just might love this recipe from allrecipes.com (modified slightly)

Fresh Watermelon Water

  • 4 cups cubed seedless watermelon – deseed if you are using one with seeds, otherwise, the texture is too grainy.
  • 1/2 cup water
  • 1/4 cup white sugar, or to taste (original recipe calls for 1/2 cup – way too sweet)
  • 12-24 fresh mint leaves (this is a to taste option)
  • 2 Tablespoons of fresh lime juice
  • Lime slices for garnish
  • Lots of ice

Puree the watermelon and water in a blender until smooth. Muddle the sugar, lime juice, and 12 to 24 of the fresh mint leaves.  Evenly distribute the muddled mixture into the bottom of 6-8 glasses.  Fill each glass with ice. Pour in the watermelon water, and stir before serving. Garnish with lime slices and a few mint leaves.

If you are looking to create an adult beverage, you can add a jigger of GOOD vodka to the glasses before pouring the watermelon water.  Cheers and Enjoy
