The Story of My New Bohemian Meditation Pillow and My Dog

A few weeks ago, I decided I needed a new bohemian styled meditation pillow in addition to my old but wonderful yoga mat.   I search a few stores, only to find myself in the middle of a HomeGoods during their India themed month.  Essentially, for me, the equivalent of putting a child in a candy shop. I did not even grab a cart, hey, I was just browsing anyway, not planning on buying anything. Let’s just say, I stepped in with complete denial I could go through the entire store and not touch one item less buy anything.

It started with one thing, a beautiful mandala, hand-painted tray, about 16″ Radius.  I thought this is it, leave now.  Two hours later, still no buggy, I have stacks of towels, a table runner, two serving platters, all nestled in perfect balance on this one platter.I thought, maybe I should grab a buggy.  Na, I just kept on pursuing deals and then, of course, the clearance section was the icing on the cake.  Normally the aisle for misfit goods is worthless, this time, however, I was wrong, so the pile up continued.

I arrived at the register, teetering on the edge of tilting over as I wait patiently, telling myself again, I won’t buy it all, just one or two items.  Nope, wrong again, I did a compulsive thing to make myself feel better and decided to “redecorate” the studio office, which doubles as an office and art studio and for my dog, a lounge.  I secretly try to keep everything contained in the back of my mini cooper, including 4 plants, groceries, and I literally could not fit one more item into the car.

Now the fun part, I had already completed an all-natural, deep spring scrub on the entire house, every nook cranny, and corner.  I re-hung artwork (rotation) and re-arranged furniture.  Now, it was time to get that meditation area in order.  First, let’s start with the cool rug.  Completely tribal with tassels on both ends of which, my dog went straight for.  With the rug in place, it was time for the meditation pillow placement.  When I placed it, I had time to sit on it for a few seconds.  The time was short so I decided, let’s do yoga tomorrow. The next day, still not enough time for yoga, however, Mardi was able to strike a mean sideways corpse pose. So much for my ownership of the pillow.

So here is the takeaway for the day.  It’s time to spring clean, mop floors, clean lights and fans, the refrigerator and just clean.  Move furniture around and namely MAKE YOUR OWN SPACE!  This is such an important part of getting into the bohemian good vibes.  Do it for yourself, it costs nothing to carve out a nugget of privacy in a special place. Remember, pets love floor pillows, stake your claim to it early.  Remember, JadeCrate is all about the bohemian lifestyle.  Start with a clean slate for the spring and bring some boho loveliness into your space.

Mindfulness Monday – Simply Breathe

The purest form of mindfulness is to breathe simply.

The caveat here with the exercise is to breathe with conscious effort.  All those breaths have a purpose besides keeping your heart and brain going.  We challenge you to start a 5 Mindful Breaths exercise you can do every day, before work, at work, after work, anywhere you like.  Rules of engagement are you will use these five deep breaths of fresh air to think free and preferably concentrate on only the breathing.  This exercise is particularly useful if you are feeling restless, anxious, angry, or stressed.  Use the time to focus on only one thought or image.  If necessary close your eyes and picture something that brings you peace, joy, makes you feel relaxed and hold on to it.  When you complete the exercise, you will notice a difference in your state of mind and a big dose of H2O is healthy for you too. In Season – Watermelon

The JadeCrate newsletter comes with a recipe, usually comprised of in-season vegetables and a protein.  However, it’s July, it’s hot, thirst beats out hunger in this simple recipe.

If you are looking for something refreshing and unique and maybe you are a vegetarian or vegan, you just might love this recipe from allrecipes.com (modified slightly)

Fresh Watermelon Water

  • 4 cups cubed seedless watermelon – deseed if you are using one with seeds, otherwise, the texture is too grainy.
  • 1/2 cup water
  • 1/4 cup white sugar, or to taste (original recipe calls for 1/2 cup – way too sweet)
  • 12-24 fresh mint leaves (this is a to taste option)
  • 2 Tablespoons of fresh lime juice
  • Lime slices for garnish
  • Lots of ice

Puree the watermelon and water in a blender until smooth. Muddle the sugar, lime juice, and 12 to 24 of the fresh mint leaves.  Evenly distribute the muddled mixture into the bottom of 6-8 glasses.  Fill each glass with ice. Pour in the watermelon water, and stir before serving. Garnish with lime slices and a few mint leaves.

If you are looking to create an adult beverage, you can add a jigger of GOOD vodka to the glasses before pouring the watermelon water.  Cheers and Enjoy
