When we started the creation of JadeCrate, I went back to the roots of my early days in New Mexico, when I was corporate and could not fully live boho. Boho’s everywhere in the area (including me), had a dream catcher, one in the car, one on the door, how can you have too many? What I really wanted to know later is feathers are not only on dream catchers, they are symbolized in jewelry, apparel, the over all boho look. I researched several sites to boil down the brass tacks of the root of the meaning of feathers in the Native American culture and found a great quick read summing it up. My summary is feathers for a boho chic represents our space in time, our spirit, one with nature, at peace, and being alive. We wear our feathers with pride because the meaning to us is really our boho spirited lifestyle. Also, this is a spoiler alert for the October 2017 JadeCrate Box…only about 10 days until they ship out, we have a few left, so sign up today to be a part of the boho chic spirit.
Meaning of Feathers
The Meaning of Feathers plays an important role in the belief system of Native American Indians. Their beliefs are based on Animism which embodies the spiritual idea that all natural things within the universe, including birds, have souls or spirits. Animists believe that souls or spirits exist, not only in humans but also in birds, their feathers and in animals, plants, rocks and natural phenomena. The doctrine of animism is that everything is alive, and possesses an inherent virtue, power, and wisdom.
The Meaning of Feathers
The generalized meaning of feathers signified honor & connected the owner with the Creator and the bird the feathers came from. Native Indian warriors were awarded a feather when they took coup or were particularly brave in battle. When a feather falls to earth, the Native Americans believe it carries all of the energy of its former attachment on a bird to a living being. Feathers are perceived as gifts from the sky, the sea, and the trees. Feathers arrive unexpectedly, but not without purpose.
